About us
We believe in the strength of authenticity, the honesty of good food and the importance of knowing where your ingredients come from. That is why our sea salt is 100% natural and simply made by the elemental forces of the sea, sun and wind. The salt crystals are carefully harvested by hand in the Algarve. This traditional approach allows us to leave the salt as untouched as possible, free from any additives.
The heritage of our sea salt
The Algarve, located in the southernmost part of Portugal, is a region known for its stunning coastlines, golden sandy beaches and turquoise sea. The region enjoys a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers, ideal for our salt.
The Algarve is home to several natural parks and reserves, such as the Ria Formosa Natural Park, where most of our salt is sourced directly. Due to the wide variety of birds, it is an ideal place for nature lovers.
Harvesting of our sea salt
The authentic harvesting process of our sea salt is deeply rooted in the natural rhythms and traditional practices that passed down through generations. The method is inspired by respect for nature and the desire to preserve the naturalness of the salt.
The process starts with Atlantic sea water, which is channelled into small, shallow ponds. These ponds, only up to 60m2 big, allow the sun and wind to slowly evaporate the water, leaving behind the salt. This practice is one of the oldest and most natural methods to recover sea salt.
The ’Marnotos’ play a crucial role in this harvesting practice. Using traditional tools, they carefully gather the salt crystals from the ponds. This thorough work ensures that the salt retains its natural, edgy structure.
By avoiding modern processing techniques such as washing and drying, and by not including additives, we ensure that our sea salt remains as natural and as untouched as possible.
